You can have your cake and eat it too — if it’s a Honey Mama’s cocoa truffle bar. Made with nothing but five nutrient-rich superfoods, they’re an absolute treat for the mind, body, and soul.
Founder Christy Goldsby started out by selling homemade bars at her local farmer’s market. Today, Honey Mama’s operates as a much larger business, but the basic model hasn’t changed. From Tahini Tangerine to Coffee Nib Crunch, every treat goes from their (upgraded) kitchen to your table.
Recently, we caught up with Christy to learn more about her journey and hear her advice for fellow entrepreneurs.
01 Why did you start Honey Mama’s?
I started Honey Mama’s to show how our foundational wellness intersects with our food choices, self-care practices, and care for others. I did this by introducing a decadent, indulgent treat made with only organic, nourishing, whole food ingredients. The end result is an Old World comfort food experience reminiscent of your favorite childhood cake — a pure win-win!
02 What obstacles did you face along the way?
We went from a farmer’s market business to a nationally distributed brand, so we had to get proficient at every scale level. That meant managing supply chains, food safety, sales, marketing, finances, and more to support continued strategic growth. We also make all of our products in-house, so I’d say our largest obstacles have come from the manufacturing side.
03 What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?
I’ve learned that there will always be several areas to focus on and hats to be worn during a company’s growth period. The key is knowing when it’s time to step back and build your team. Our growth became manageable for me as a leader once I was able to add talented employees who fit the Honey Mama’s culture. Much of your success will come from finding the right people for the right positions.
Establish your mission early on in the process and map out the strategic goals you’ll need to see it through. Those pillars will be your North Star at every phase, but don’t be afraid to adjust your business plan when necessary.
Above all — network, network, network. Stay connected to your peers and inspirational people.
04 What’s on the horizon for Honey Mama’s?
We’re increasing our distribution and as we launch our convenient single-serve bars at all Bristol Farms locations. We’re not just increasing awareness for our brand — we’re showing people everywhere that indulgent treats can be wonderfully nutritious. Meanwhile, we’re whipping up new seasonal flavors in our kitchen. We can’t wait to share them with our community!
Overall, our goal is to share delight, fun, and as many Honey Mama’s treats as possible.
05 How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?
I prioritize some form of movement every day before work. Whether it’s walking, dancing, biking, meditating, or practicing yoga, it’s all about approaching the day with a clear mind. I also block out time every week to allow for “30,000 ft.” thinking — eyes up and away from my computer so that I can view my business from a broader vantage point. Outside of work, I make sure to spend quality time with my dear friends and family.
My team inspires me with their dedication, talent, and incredible work ethic. Our vibrant customer community is a constant source of inspiration too. Their enthusiasm, love, and passion fills me up with ALL the light! Ultimately, it’s all about empowering people to take care of themselves, celebrate moments of happiness, and live their best lives.
