Created by husband and wife dental surgeons, Dr. Arash Aftabi and Dr. Farnoush Fadavi, Bala Enzyme was created to aid recovery, hydrate, and fight inflammation. This plant-powered powder uses turmeric, amino acids, electrolytes, and enzymes from papaya and pineapple to speed up muscle recovery, reduce swelling, improve gut health, and hydrate fast. It’s also 100% sugar-free and available in fruity flavors like pineapple, berry, and lime, making it an easy addition to your daily routine.
Recently, we caught up with co-founder Dr. Farnoush Fadavi to learn more about their mission and hear her advice for fellow entrepreneurs.
1. Why did you start Bala Enzyme?
I am a retired dental surgeon in Southern California. Bala was inspired by 20 years of research on plant-based therapies to help our patients recover from post-operative swelling, bruising, and inflammation after oral surgery. The Bala formulation was finalized as a natural alternative to pharmaceuticals to reduce inflammation with the addition of effective hydration without sugar. I personally experienced significant benefits from Bala after an accident in 2018 left me with chronic pain and forced me to retire. I soon started sharing my solution with friends, patients, and local athletes who were amazed by the positive impact on how their bodies recovered from training, exercise, and chronic pain. To get the most benefits from Bala, it is recommended to be taken twice a day for the first five days, and then at least once a day afterward to be integrated into your lifestyle.
2. What obstacles did you face along the way?
Building a brand is not for the faint of heart. When we first launched online it was right at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and we had to deal with the supply chain crisis. From creating the concept to selling online to finally having brick-and-mortar, the competition is fierce. Our product stands by itself because it works and there is no other like it on the market. In addition, we needed to teach people about Bala’s scientific formulation and the benefits of enzymes and turmeric.
3. What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?
Persistence and perseverance are key. Never allow anyone to tell you that you won’t succeed. Explore all options, especially when finding the support you need. Believe in your product and don’t be afraid to promote it to everyone you meet. Have an informative package to present to investors. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
4. What’s on the horizon for Bala Enzyme?
We continue working to get Bala on more store shelves in the U.S. We’re also working on new flavors and other innovations to improve people’s lives with plant-based enzymes. Endorsements from athletes are also in the works.
5. How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?
Bala is a 24/7 endeavor and we are constantly wearing different hats. It’s a roller coaster ride. However, it’s very important that I make time for my family. You have to take time to exercise to give your mind and body a break. I eat healthily and practice a healthy lifestyle, as I recommend to everyone taking Bala. I was able to reap the benefits of Bala and I want to share it with everyone I meet so they can too. In times when I am stressed, it is inspiring to read reviews and testimonials of people who have used Bala and reaped the benefits.
