tinned fish examples

From sardines to wild-caught salmon, tinned fish has taken the world by storm. Traditionally, tinned fish has been viewed as a budget-friendly source of protein, but in recent years, it has become a trendy favorite amongst foodies. Whether you’re whipping up a quick and healthy lunch or creating a “seacuterie board” for your next party, we carry a premium selection of tinned fish and plant-based alternatives. In addition to being ultra-convenient, canned seafood is also packed full of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, making it a healthy choice for at-home meals or hosting. Whether you’re whipping up a quick and healthy lunch or looking to impress at your next dinner party, we’ve got you covered with all of our best tinned fish tips and tricks!

Building the Perfect Seacuterie Board

Like any great grazing board, your seacuterie board should be just as beautiful as it is mouthwatering. Since brands like Fishwife and Seed to Surf produce such intentional and aesthetic packaging, place your cans back inside the boxes once opened, or display the cans alone for a more minimalistic look. Though the tins should act as the focal point of the board, surround them with a variety of sauces and sides for a robust and full appearance. Grilled bread is a must, as is softened Le Beurre Bordier butter, but feel free to get creative and experiment with your other toppings and accoutrements.

What You’ll Need

Tinned Fish
Tinned fish is the star of your seacuterie board, so you’ll need to choose your selection wisely! Tuna is a canned classic, and Fishwife’s Albacore Tuna in Olive Oil boasts a silky texture and rich taste. Fishwife Sardines with Lemon or Hot Pepper are both extremely potent in flavor, while the Slow-Smoked Mackerel with Chili Flakes has subtle spice and tantalizing smokiness. Prefer a plant-based take on tinned fish? Seed to Surf uses mushrooms and celery root to replicate the taste and texture of seafood such as snow crab and whitefish. If you’re hosting a diverse group of diners, Seed to Surf offers diversity for vegans looking to partake in seacuterie grazing.

Bread
A quality loaf of sourdough is the ideal vessel for your tinned fish and toppings. Toasting your bread gives it a nice crunch that contrasts with the texture of tinned fish, while grilling your bread results in a flavorful char. For a lighter bite, consider using crackers or our Cracked Pepper Kettle-Cooked Potato Chips.

Pickled Veggies
Pickled veggies add acidity to your spread, providing balance and zest in each bite. Though classic pickles work great, pepperoncini peppers are slightly spicy and have a more vibrant flavor, while red peppers fall on the sweeter side.

Butter
High-quality butter makes all of the difference when enjoying tinned fish on a fresh piece of bread. Le Bordier butter, which is available both salted and unsalted, boasts a rich, creamy texture and slightly nutty taste that complements the natural oils in tinned seafood.
